About the Species
The Axolotl is a unique amphibian renowned for its incredible biological traits. Unlike most salamanders, axolotls exhibit neoteny, retaining their aquatic juvenile features, including external feathery gills, throughout their lives.
Why Are They Endangered?
Native exclusively to Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City, wild axolotl populations have plummeted due to:
- Water Pollution: Heavy urbanization and runoff.
- Habitat Loss: Draining of ancient canals.
- Invasive Species: Introduced fish preying on young axolotls.
